PEN Action - Mexico: letter to the Senate
PEN International | 05 December 2011
Dear Friends,
As some of you will already know, the Mexican Chamber of Deputies recently passed a constitutional amendment which, if made law, would empower Mexican federal authorities to prosecute crimes against journalists and freedom of expression.
That would mean that Mexican writers and print journalists would potentially be provided with greater protection from those who wish to silence them through the use of threats and violence.
John Ralston Saul, International President of PEN International has sent a letter to the Mexican Senate urging it to speedily ratify the amendment and we would like PEN Centres to do the same.
I am attaching English and Spanish versions of the letter sent to the Senate, and also a word document containing texts that you can adapt for your own letters. Letters should be sent to the address included in John Ralston Saul’s letter.
If you prefer to email please use the address of the President of the Senate,Sen. José González Morfín:jgmorfin@senado.gob.mx
Please let us know of any correspondence that you have with the Senate.
Thank you in advance.
